Opinion: Making buses work for Klang Valley

Originally published by The Edge Malaysia on 27 Aug 2026. Photo credit: by Sam Fong/The Edge Malaysia has poured billions of ringgit into rail — the LRT, MRT and, most recently, LRT3 — yet millions of commuters remain stuck in daily gridlock. A transit system is only as strong as its feeder network, and here, that network is buses. Today, public buses here mean long, unpredictable waits, “ghost buses” that vanish from tracking apps, and vast gaps in suburban coverage. Commuters aren’t choosing their own vehicles out of habit — they’re pushed into them because the bus system offers no reliable, dignified alternative. A thin bus fleet, a thin ridership base Klang Valley runs around 1,200 buses across roughly 300

Separation at source — one small step for man, one giant leap for Malaysia’s waste management

Originally published by The Edge Malaysia on 12 Aug 2026. Photo credit: by Zahid Izzani/The Edge (Aug 12): Every day, Malaysia generates more than 39 million kilogrammes of solid waste. Yet more than 80% of it ends up in landfills, where mountains of decomposing waste produce methane and contaminated leachate that can pollute the surrounding environment for decades. The problem is not simply that Malaysians produce too much waste. It is also that much of what could be recovered, recycled or composted is instead thrown away together with general waste. Wet food waste, for instance, can contaminate cardboard, paper and other recyclable materials when everything is disposed of in the same plastic bag. Valuable materials such as aluminium cans are

Extending PTPTN Loan Repayment Waivers to IPTS Students

With Enforceable Service Bonds to Retain Talent Executive Summary In announcing the 2026 Budget, the government declared that PTPTN loan waivers for first-class graduates from private higher education institutions (IPTS) will be discontinued from 2026 onwards. The decision has shocked the public and left many hardworking, high-achieving IPTS students deeply disappointed. The study estimated the annual cost of granting full waivers to IPTS’ first-class graduates is between RM82 and RM97.5 million – a small fraction (0.6%) of RM15.5 billion saved from the targeted subsidy measures announced in the same budget. This paper argues that reinstating the now-scrapped PTPTN first-class loan-repayment waiver for qualified IPTS graduates would (i) help retain local talent, (ii) address inequities arising from constrained and opaque public-university

Empowering Malaysians in Environmental Decision-Making

Introduction Ladies and gentlemen, selamat pagi and thank you for being here. Imagine a small Malaysian community living beside a lush forest and a clean river. One day, news arrives that a large industrial project – perhaps a factory or a mining site – will be built nearby. The locals are shocked; nobody asked for their input, yet they will bear the consequences. This scenario is far too common. From toxic waste facilities to deforestation projects, we have seen controversies where development was decided behind closed doors and public voices were an afterthought. We’re here today as civil society, as concerned Malaysians, to say: this must change. My talk will focus on three key areas where Malaysia can do better
